Andrew's Sprocket

a gear for all facets of life

So a few months ago I wrote on the transition to all digital television. I thought it was a closed case. But Mr. Pres Elect brought it up and wants to push the termination date back a six months and pump more money into this ridiculous scandalous money laundry scheme. Yes, that’s what it is. If these converter boxes didn’t have a government subsidy they would cost $20. Which is what you end up paying after the $40 subsidy. So they jack the price of this box up to $60 and take government money (which of course comes out of our pockets in taxes somewhere). Did the government issue rabbit ears when analog TV first came out? So why do they think they need to subsidize this upgrade? Unless it’s just to make some money. Which someone is doing…cough cough Madoff? I’m kidding but somehow wouldn’t surprise me.

The budge already $1.34 Billion and now Barack is asking for more. But why? I mean other than the fact that the system was setup to fail when the these $40 coupons were prepaid for but had expiration dates. I mean is it really because people will be without TV? Are you serious? Ask the people. I’m sure not going to glance at the fat bar maid any differently. I have been without TV for 6 months and plan on going 6 years. Yes, it’s part of the bigger plan to keep the American people absorbed with entertainment while other things get budgeted for in the background.

This catering to every pebble is what stunts innovation and progress in a technical world. JUST DO THE DAMN THING. CUT IT OFF. LET US USE THOSE AIRWAVES FOR THE BIGGEST WI-FI PROJECT KNOW TO MAN.

So please Mr. Pres Elect, spend our time on something else.

This day in age you would think it mandatory for employers to cover at least part of an employees health coverage. Well in some states yes there a law exists. Recently Massachusetts passed a law that you must be covered and I think the fine is $200 if you’re not. I believe it’s the tax form 1099-HC. But not all states have this law. From a business perspective I would think it to be in the best interest of the company to have health coverage for their employees if not 100% coverage, like my sisters company does. As it promotes wellness and positive energy in the work place.

Lets just look at the sequence of events over the past week to determine why this is important, because I like to base my findings and policy making on real world happenings.

So employee A comes in to the office on say Tuesday, coughing and complaining of an illness. He comes in Wednesday and Thursday with the same complaints. Friday employee B doesn’t even come in and is reported to have fallen ill. Employee A confides that he is going to the doctor on Tuesday to get checked out. Meanwhile, Friday afternoon rolls around and employee C complains of symptoms and is ill all weekend and Monday. Employee C wanted to stay home on Monday but is new to the company and there is a rule where he must work 3 months first to build up “sick days”. So he can’t afford to stay home and comes in to the office. Meanwhile employee D starts feeling ill on Monday. And this becomes a cycle lasting 2, 3, or even 4 weeks.

Let’s look at what happened. Obviously if employee A stayed home and dealt with the symptoms, the likely hood and risk goes down for everyone at the office. Now employee A may have hesitated to see a doctor due to health coverage. If the company pays 100% of this then the hesitation goes away. Employee C must apply for this 3 month rule before he gets any “sick days” which is ridiculous. Sick days in general are setting the system up for failure since you may get 6-8 “sick days” a year. While some people may just end up using those as extended weekends and are not really sick. But when they run out and are really sick they may end up coming into the office putting everyone at risk again or feeling like they have to come in because they haven’t earned any yet.

As en employee I don’t want to be around sickos and as an employer I don’t want my people getting sick.

High risk high reward? Not here, that’s only in gambling and skydiving. So we must abolish these “sick days”. If you are sick, don’t come to work. Better yet let’s go back to elementary school and require a note from a doctor. This forces the employee to use the health coverage provided and everyone is happy.

I am looking at this from the business owner and from the employee and putting both interests at the forefront. For the bottom line, the business owner must look at the long term payoff being that their employees will be at the office more and productivity will increase but it will be the short term payoff that will really reward them as they won’t be getting sick :)

Policy Proposal:
Stay home if you are sick.
Abolish “Sick Days”, optionally require a doctor’s note or be docked pay.

Now, I’ve said nothing of the health system in this country on purpose. It just infuriates me and my blood pressure starts to spike and my pulse rate the same and then where am I? Yes, I am in need of medical attention. Which is the last place I want to be with a 4th world health care system. Because a 4th world health care system is evil and is monetarily driven. I know that is the society that has been rammed down our necks. We have the time, tools and the talent but there is a layer of privatized bureaucracy that obfuscates and rapes our doctors of the problem solving curiosity of fixing people that I know all doctors desire.

Anyway, I hope we can get with and stay well.

I saw President Obama speak in Leesburg VA 13 days ago. I spent the past week traveling the country and am now in Santa Fe NM and the overwhelming presence of prosperity and hopefully rising stock prices has never felt greater. Santa Fe supporters spread the word with Obamanos! signs.

road |rōd| noun: a wide way leading from one place to another.

Three of my favorite books have “road” in the title and in a few weeks I will be traveling cross country on a road trip, starting a new chapter in my life. I thought it pertinent to mention these books prior to my journey.

On The Road by Jack Kerouac (1957)
The End of the Road by John Barth (1958)
The Road by Cormac McCarthy (2006)

I recently read The Road and found a few memorable quotes:

He pulled the boy closer.
Just remember that the things you put into your head are there forever, he said. You might want to think about that.
You forget some things, dont you?
Yes, You forget what you want to remember and you remember what you want to forget.

A notable writing style by McCarthy is the absence of the apostrophe when used in contractions to show the omission of letters. Maybe he was inspired by Frank Zappa’s notion that “the crux of the biscuit is the apostrophe.” From Zappa’s great album, Apostrophe(‘) (1974).

Another of my favorite passages from The Road.

On this road there are no godspoke men. They are gone and I am left and they have taken with them the world. Query: How does the never to be differ from what never was?

This suggests that never to be was destined to never happen but what never was at least proposed some chance of happening.

A worthy site to check out is booklamp.org. The author compares it as the Pandora for books, however, its database is not as vast as Pandora but still a noble effort and some cool technology.

I am hoping that my trip relates more to Kerouac’s than the other two but time will tell…

P.S. The Road motion picture is set to be released in 2009.

On the subject of no air conditioning on this hot summer night she sent a chill, demanding I think of her when I feel a breeze since it was her that had sent it. And I replied.

I like to sweat.
Then lounge around in my sweat.
Then drip drip drip.
Until my bottom lip.
Recommends a punishment.
For my upper lip.

Then she remarked about what a hilarious slip and slid scene it would be, since I sold my mattress on craigslist and now inflating an air mattress every 6 hours. I also sold my A/C unit, hence this sweaty sequence. Anyway, my lease is up in a month and less to move is better right? Or does it just mean more to buy when I get to where I’m going? I see it as a process of recycling and upgrading, a win win for all parties involved. Now a few more beers before I can just pass out in my sweat and wake renewed or with a sore back. Probably the later, since my ass will be elevated above my head on this poor deflated air mattress. I know, I could go with an aerobed that inflates as you sleep. As soon as I recycle this one I will upgrade.
